Chair

Derek Brown

Candidate for UTGOP Chair

I am running to be Chair of the Utah Republican Party.

As a lifelong Republican, I am committed to seeing that our party is united, strong, and can win tough elections.

During the past decade I have served as:

- Senator Mike Lee’s Deputy Chief of Staff and State Director
- A member the Utah House of Representatives
- Republican Party Delegate
- A volunteer on numerous winning Republican campaigns

As Chair of our party, I will be committed to winning elections, including those seats that we lost in 2018.  You—the delegate—play a critical role in selecting those candidates that support our platform, and it is the party’s responsibility to make sure that those candidates are elected!

Thank you for serving as a delegate,

Derek Brown

Phill Wright

Candidate for UTGOP Chair

I have been a registered Republican for nearly 40 years. My first vote cast was in 1980 and I’m proud to say I helped elect Ronald Reagan to be our 40th President! I have lived in Davis County for more than two decades and have worked at every nearly every level of the Utah Republican Party, including Chair of the Utah Delegation to the 2016 Republican National Convention, State Party Vice-chair, Davis County Party Chair, and fifteen-time state or county delegate.

I’ve been involved so long my hair turned white! But, that white hair comes from experience and perspective our party needs at this challenging time: We need to grow our party by “Working from the Ground Up!” If you agree our party should grow from the roots - it’s grassroots - I ask for your vote at the upcoming state convention on May 4.

Vice-Chair

Kera Birkeland

Candidate for UTGOP Vice-Chair

My husband, Lars, and I have been married for 17 years. We have six children who are our priority in life. I teach preschool and officiate high school basketball. We live about 35 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, in beautiful Morgan County.

Over the past eight years I have served in various positions within the Utah Republican Party. I have been a County and State Delegate, a National Delegate to the RNC, a County Vice-Chair, County Chair and currently the Vice- Chair of the Utah Republican Party.

As both County Chair and State party Vice-Chair, I have organized fundraisers, meet the candidate events, and trainings. I greatly enjoy building up the party and supporting Republican candidates. I take that responsibility very seriously.

As County Chair and State Party Vice-Chair, I have exhibited the ability to listen to all points of view. We can find common ground, while maintaining our principles. Having been a State Delegate, I have a deep appreciation for the caucus system. I believe it provides the best way for grassroots participation and representation. We are, however, the party of freedom, and our candidates currently have the freedom to choose between two paths to the ballot. Let's make the caucus and convention system the preferred path!

My goal is to build the Utah Republican Party through the following:

1.Provide support and training to county parties, our Republican candidates and elected officials.

2. Promote our platform.

3. Follow our party constitution and bylaws.

4. Increase voter outreach. We must focus on reaching out to our youth. Many elections will be won with the young Republican vote.

5. Bring back donors and focus our outreach on grassroots fundraising.

6. Work with the State Central Committee members to help make our meetings efficient and enjoyable. Our committee meetings should be a place where all ideas to improve the party are vetted and the best ideas are implemented.

Aaron T Starks

Candidate for UTGOP Vice-Chair

An Innovative Vision

  • Create a statewide strategy that is clear, concise and promotes participation within the party at all levels. This strategy will include aggressive goals for fund raising, recruiting and volunteering.
  • Structure the party to increase technological capability, thus improving delegate’s ability to participate from rural areas in Utah. Currently, delegates from rural counties sacrifice time and money to attend committee meetings, events, etc. We should explore options for virtual attendance.
  • Successfully increase fund raising efforts to support candidates, fund internal operations and invest in further technologies to improve party performance, i.e. website improvements, candidate promotions and voter education efforts.
  • Establish stronger ties within the community through furthering volunteer efforts statewide. This should include efforts to educate youth in the areas of government, personal finance and citizenship. This should be an active, ongoing effort in each county.
